Wael Toubaji is a visual artist, animation filmmaker, and producer. He studied painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University, earning his diploma in 2009. In 2020, he completed higher education in Contemporary Visual Arts at Funen Art Academy in Denmark. His research focused on the intersection of moving images and painting, exploring time-based medias as an artistic practice.
Wael’s work is deeply shaped by his early experiences, developing and artistic vision under a fascist dictatorship, navigating revolution and war, and later living in exile. His Futurism-inspired practice raises questions about structural violence in modern states, often examining the social structures around him. Still working with moving images as the main medium of his artistic practice, he blends past and future by merging digital and handcrafted aesthetics. His process of decomposition, repetition, and reconstruction allows him to visually depict and manipulate the perception of time—a central theme in his work.
After relocating to Berlin in 2020, he expanded his focus to urban and public spaces, using alternative platforms to engage directly with the social sphere. His studio is currently based in Berlin, and he continues to work between Germany, Denmark, and recently in Syria.
